Q: When should a connected product process data at the edge instead of the cloud?
A: A connected product should process data at the edge when it needs to respond quickly, keep working without reliable internet access, limit the amount of data leaving a site, or meet customer requirements for privacy and control. Cloud processing is often better for long-term storage, fleet-wide analytics, centralized management, and applications that combine data from many products.

In many cases, the right answer is a hybrid architecture. Time-sensitive decisions stay local, while selected data is sent to the cloud for broader analysis and management. Our work with Flexco is a good example of balancing real-time detection, battery life, and long-term cloud analytics.

Q: How do you update an edge device without bricking it?
A: The most important safeguard is an A/B update strategy with a reliable fallback. New firmware is written to an inactive partition and should not replace the current working version until the device has successfully restarted, completed health checks, and confirmed that it can communicate with the update service. If anything fails, the device can return to the previous version.

The security process matters just as much. Firmware must be signed correctly, devices must be provisioned with the right credentials, and the update process must be able to recover from lost power, interrupted connectivity, or an incomplete download.

Q: Can an IoT device continue working without an internet or cloud connection?
A: Yes. A connected device does not have to depend on a continuous internet or cloud connection. The right approach depends on the product and where it will be used.

For some systems, an on-premises server allows devices to operate locally when data cannot leave the site or internet access is unavailable. In other cases, a mobile phone can act as a temporary gateway when a user interacts with the product. When connectivity is intermittent, the device needs enough local memory to store data safely and a clear process for sending it once the connection returns.

Q: When should I build a custom device and when is something off-the-shelf a better option?
A: An off-the-shelf device is usually the better choice when the use case is common, available products meet the core requirements, and speed or lower upfront cost matters most. A custom device makes more sense when the solution is central to the product strategy, requires unique functionality or integrations, or provides meaningful control over cost, security, data, and future development.

The decision comes down to whether the added flexibility and differentiation justify the investment and long-term support. Start with user needs, technical requirements, expected volume, business value, and the role the device will play in the broader product roadmap.

Q: What security requirements must an IoT device meet to pass an enterprise IT review?
A: Requirements vary by company and industry, but enterprise IT teams commonly expect secure device identity, encrypted communications, controlled network access, strong authentication, vulnerability management, and a dependable software-update process. They may also ask for secure boot, signed firmware, a software bill of materials, penetration-test results, audit logs, data-retention policies, and clear documentation of what data leaves the customer environment.

It is also important to understand where the product will be deployed and which regulations apply. Requirements such as the EU Cyber Resilience Act can affect how connected products are designed, documented, updated, and supported throughout their lifecycle.
